As an unofficial member of staff, I hide out in the workshop; this leaves Archie to deal with the Saturday morning queue which reaches as far as the shop door. I turn my phone to silent, as I need to focus on a whole stack of urgent repairs. I’m happy to work for free; after all I bartered my time to pay for Lucie’s new phone. I like being busy in the back room at Gadget Fix, I feel completely at home solving puzzles, which for me is what each repair is. Maybe I could work here permanently? I push the thought aside, as it merges with other thoughts of my parents’ horror and disappointment if I passed on going to Cambridge and spent my days here.
